Time of the trees_for INDAF

Kyungmi Kim's Time of the trees, a collaborative work with a computer engineer and electronic musician Kangsung Lee, is a more developed version of A tree – I sweep leaves, which was exhibited in Mushroomarts, New York in 2006. It consists of the image of trees that simultaneously reflects the real-time weather information received from all over the world. Flowers bloom and fall on these virtual trees. Dense summer foliage comes, and eventually fall to the ground. The change of seasons shown through the trees represent the nature's continuous cycle. Fallen leaves pile up on the floor, and the audience can participate in the act of sweeping them as an independent element. This work serves as a metaphor of our lives through the nature's cycle, in that the sweeping of leaves symbolizes the period of purification. This is an image installation work that lets us become a free, decisive part of natural phenomena and gives us an opportunity to think over the human existence through the change of trees, offering an interactive imagery that lets the audience consciously think about, and participate in the input of the external information and their cognition of it.
